Forget about the snow — and golf

January 10, 2009

A few months back, you may recall — heck, I think it was back in the spring — the idea was first floated for an indoor mini-golf/ice cream shop in the old Cardoos building at 135 Westborough Road (Rte. 30).

Guess what? It’s here.

Fore Seasons

And if you’re a mom who has been wondering just what to do with her winter child’s birthday party, you might want to give them a call (starting Monday, their phone number is 508-839-7300), because Fore Seasons Mini Golf is really rather adorable — and it’s adjacent to T-Station Pizza and Cafe Mayan (they’re all interconnected inside and I totally need to go back and review Cafe Mayan. They have breakfast daily and brunch Sundays), so there’s food for the kids and coffee for the adults. Fun!

What’s it look like inside?

I’m sorry. This is going to be another “curse my camera” post (anyone want to give me a Canon Digital Rebel?), because it’s impossible to turn off my flash. You might be looking at this photo saying “I don’t see a problem here, this is an OK picture,” but you don’t understand. It’s completely spoiling the best part about Fore Seasons.

You play in the dark.

In the dark. With a black light that causes all the whites and neons to glow.  If your kids happen to be wearing anything with white on it, they’ll glow too. It’s very cool and it’s a fun little twist for your basic nine holes.

The mini golf is run by Bryan Gatley, who you may recall is a former teacher and children’s author, and the complex itself is the brainchild of Dick Anderson. Dick said part of the opening delay came in part from a bump in the bylaws — Grafton’s zoning didn’t recognize “mini golf” — but they finally managed to open for business two weeks ago.

“Initially, ( asked if we needed someone to sweep floors while they were building the place and renovating inside,” Bryan said. “He asked if I liked golf.”

Fore Seasons is open Fridays, 4-8 p.m., Saturdays, noon-8 p.m. and Sundays, noon-5 p.m. They’re available for parties and events during the week and expect to expand their hours once Holy Cow Ice Cream opens for business in April.

Yes, it’s true — Swirls & Scoops will now have competition for frozen treats. I’m thinking we need to do a head-to-head taste test in the spring.

“We’re also going to have a deck off the back, so people can get rattled by the trains,” Dick said.

There is a party room available and there will also be a few arcade games. They’re also plan to get a Wii.

Rounds are $3 per person for nine holes, $2 for additional rounds. And did I mention it’s inside, out of the snow?

“We’re calling it ‘Family fun on the putting edge,’” Bryan said.

This is great…I no longer have to drag the kids all the way to Webster for the nearest “Monster Golf”.

Thank you for the info – my son is a huge mini golf fan & keeps asking when April will be here (he is 4) so that we can return to the West End Creamery mini golf. I have seen the ads in the Grafton News about this place & after reading your blog just now, I called & yes, they are open this entire school vacation week noon-5pm! Excellent – we may have to check that out, today :)
