Got a spare $3.5 million?

January 11, 2009

This is a little worrisome in this economy — I was just forwarded this listing of a Grafton home for sale. It’s an even $3.5 million, on 55 acres, four bedrooms, 14 rooms over all, attached 3-car garage, pool, and an additional 3-car garage with office space.

There aren’t any pictures, but I know the place well. We spent a lot of time in the real estate office there, you see.

So why is Jon LeClaire’s house for sale — and what does that mean for the Grafton neighborhood that is still, technically, under construction? What does this mean for all the contractors in his employ?

If you click on your link that says “this listing” you can get a featured tour of the entire house!

    Cool.

    Wonder where they’re going?

Whenever I drive by that house I start humming the theme from “Dallas”!

I will be attending the Grafton Planning Board meeting tomorrow. I will let you know if there is a mention of the current state of affairs with Leclaire Builders.

Mr. L went a little too crazy for the pine (my wife would want every inch of it painted), but you can’t argue with 55 acres.

I saw this on my daily real estate alert as well, but when I clicked on it, it said “listing unavailable” so I thought it had been removed. But maybe it was a server error.

Even without being able to see it, though, I knew it was LeClaire’s house… I’m very curious about what’s going on… there’s definitely some backstory there.

Oh, and gosh — the window treatments… so over-the-top in almost every room. Are you with me on this one, girls?

I guess I’m more in line with Candice Olsen on Divine Design.

I agree with Michael. Love the 55 acres but not crazy about all that wood.

    Is that land buildable?

The wood reminds me of the lodge at the Warren Conference Center in Ashland, which I liked as a place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there.

I know his wife did the decor for the models at the Villas, so the window treatments don’t surprise me. Not my style.

It’s really all very sad — I liked the guy and he built us a very lovely house.

I did hear that Mr. Leclair had some very bad real estate dealings that could cause him to go Bankrupt.
I notciced that one of his attorneys that represented him was the name Schofield…. if you recall Mr. Schofield was convicted of bilkering lots of money… I hope this did not effect Mr. LeClair…

What was the name of the show after Dallas something about a vinyard… Falcon Crest? anyone????

Maybe he invested with Bernie Madoff??

I knew you would be hot on the scoop.

It seems like Mr. LeClaire has a very mixed reputation in Grafton. Whether you like him or dislike him, this is a really sad thing. His home was built on land that belonged to his grandfather. Something pretty bad, financially, has probably happened.

Builders seem to make and lose their fortune based on the economy. It has happened in the past to other Grafton buiders. Some have been lucky and have been able to rebuild their companies, others haven’t.

At the end, Mr. LeClaire employed a lot of local people and used local businesses, so his demise wouldn’t be a good thing.
